Happy Day of the National Awakeners!
One of them was Dobri Chintulov, the author of “Arise, Arise, Balkan Hero.” Through the lyrics of this song, he called on his fellow Bulgarians to awaken from their “deep slumber,” throw off the foreign oppressor, and win their freedom. That is why we call the leaders of the Bulgarian National Revival awakeners.
And if there was a need for awakeners in the 19th century, that means the people had fallen into a deep sleep. Of course, we are not talking about physical sleep, but rather spiritual lethargy or even spiritual death.
God’s Word also warns us against falling into spiritual lethargy by compromising biblical values and priorities and returning to the works of the flesh. So today, I invite you to reflect on this question: What does it take for the Bulgarian people to experience spiritual revival?
How can Bulgaria once again become that Balkan hero who rises up to break the chains of slavery—but this time, not by fighting against political oppression, but by seeking spiritual liberation and renewal?
