David saves Israel. He defeats Goliath and becomes a hero for Israel. The first reaction of the crowd is to sing “Saul killed his thousands and David his tens of thousands.” That’s a normal reaction for a crowd. They seem to say, “Saul, we like you but we have a new hero now.” Actually, instead of the old idol, Saul, they start worshipping a new one.
This sets the beginning of a feud between Saul and David but also prepares a trap for David. Because worship of heroes is always destructive.
