John writes his First letter to the churches in Asia Minor in a time when they are struggling with the early form of gnosticism and this leads to divisions. John writes in order to help them restore their fellowship and joy and give them confidence in their salvation. Unlike the false teachers who had claimed special knowledge, John says to the believers some important truths that they should know.
