Today we begin our examination of the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew means “gift of God.” Matthew was called by Jesus to become His disciple and, after His death and resurrection, wrote the gospel, most likely between 50 and 60 AD. In the gospel, we see Jesus presented as a King who has all authority, over all nations, at all times, and demands allegiance from all. In Matthew 1, we see three pieces of evidence that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. These are (the prophecies of) His coming, His origin, and His character.
